:: Water Music in a Dry Land ::

This necklace is reserved for Sharjah.

Dozens of ecru stick pearls cluster together in this choker; they almost look like feathers. They've been in my bead stash for a while just waiting to come together in the right piece. Each pearl has been set on its own attachment of sterling silver wire, and they swing and have lots of movement, but rest in a cluster when the choker is worn. The wire was lightly hammered on desert stone and oxidized just a bit to lend a warm tone and depth to the cluster.

After I photographed the choker, with all of its pearls gracefully spread out, I test-wore it out on an errand, and found out that the closure in the back migrated around towards the pearl cluster in the front. So I added a simple wrap of the same kind of wire on each side of the pearl cluster. The wraps are indistinguishable from the wire pearl attachments, and hold the cluster grouped together as it does when worn. This effectively anchors the pearls in front, so the closure stays in back.

The closure consists of two sterling silver spring ends, one closed and one open just enough to serve as a hook. A fused and hammered fine silver ring serves as an eye for the hook. The 5mm leather cord is a natural brown, lending a bit of soft earthiness to the pearls and silver.

I like how this necklace manages to look both casual and elegant at the same time. It has a soft feeling and is very light...you almost don't know you have it on. And the pearls make the most wonderful sound, a dry, light tinkling. A beautiful talisman for the feminine energy of water in a dry land.

Size: 27cm from the closure to the bottom of the pearl cluster. The leather cord with clasps is 47cm long. The pearl cluster is 5cm x 8cm when worn.

Care: Rinse in cool water and blot dry with a soft cloth to clean. The leather cord may be cleaned with a commercial leather cleaning and conditioning formula, such as those found in shoe stores. Avoid exposing pearls to harsh chemicals.

Water Music in a Dry Land will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a hand-decorated pillow box, along with a handwritten descriptive label.
