N is for needlework. Specifically in this case, for mother's needlework, who is very busy at her sewing machine working away. According to the story on the reverse...it reads...

This is mother's sewing machine. She runs it very fast as she sews, and it makes an "n-n-n-n" sound. To make this sound, be sure your mouth is OPEN and your tongue is against your upper teeth. (if their mouths are closed they cannot say the "n" sound, but will probably say "m"). Play guiding the cloth in the machine and make this sound.

So cute!
