This lovely tea set is likely to be early Shelley china. Although there is no backstamp which identifies it as such, the cup is typical of the “Dainty” shape and the saucer and plate have the same design features of other early Shelley pieces I have owned. Not all early Shelley china has an identifying backstamp but the pattern number on the back of the saucer (photo 5) is again typical of early Shelley pieces from the late 1800s/early 1900s. The cup has the delicate qualities of Shelley china; the thin, almost translucent look was achieved by adding the highest percentage of ground bone of any of the Staffordshire potteries.

Although there is damage to the cup, they are such pretty pieces and would look great as part of a cabinet display with other antique china. They would be a great topic of conversation when your friends visit ! The price reflects the damage and I would love this set to go to someone who appreciates china from this period.

The plate measures 7 ins across and has no cracks or chips. It has some wear on the gold edge and about a third of the surface area has fine crazing which can been seen in photo 3. The saucer measures 5⅝ ins across and is in good original condition. The cup is 2 ins high and measures 3½ ins across. It has a crack measuring approximately 1¼ ins which can be seen in photo 4. It is very difficult to see it on the outside and although the cup wouldn’t be suitable for drinking tea, the crack does not detract from the beauty of this lovely tea set.

The china will be carefully packed in bubble wrap inside a postage-style cardboard box.
