A bit of background:

Ralli quilts are traditional quilts made by women of western India and surrounding areas. They are gaining international recognition, even though women have been making these quilts for thousands of years. Rallis are a cultural symbol for the regions where they are made. Articles about Rallis have appeared in many popular American quilting magazines and other publications

Rallis are made in a simple way with only fabric, thread, needles and scissors. The top of the quilt (the decorated portion) is usually the work of one woman. She will work on the blocks as she gets time between the chores of the day. When the top portion is all pieced and sewn together, she will back the ralli with a matching fabric.

The Rallis come in 3 categories of design: patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery. The designs are not written down but are held in the women's memories and are passed down from mother to daughter across generations. Appliqué designs are also found throughout the ralli region.. Embroidery quilts are the speciality of a few nomadic groups. Many regions have their own special colors and patterns in their rallies.

Ralli quilts are becoming highly collectible and fit well with many types of decor. On a wall, a bed, or draped on a rail, they have the freshness of folk art.
