We just finished this amazing box. We found it while hiking in the mountains of CO a couple weeks ago, enjoying our moments with nature and fresh air, keeping our eyes out for any opportunities for wood hunting. A huge dead upended bristlecone pine root caught our attention and while contemplating the beauty of the root it came to us that the appendage on the side would make a natural handle for a box. So the piece came home with us to our open air and solar powered shop. It needed some filler to even out some imperferfections and improve the appearance, mostly on the ends. The handle we barely touched to showcase the weathering it had gone through, including an encounter with fire. The swirls and texture of the grain are remarkable. It has been subject to the forces of nature for years and years, waiting for a chance at another life.
The box was machined out as one piece and the opening has an irregular shape, following the contours of the box. The lid has a custom fitted piece glued to the underside to provide a snug fit. It has been finished with tung oil.
This box would lend itself to a variety of uses such as a desk organizer, tea bag box, jewelry box, keepsake box or conversation piece. It would make a great unique gift for someone, but maybe it should just sit a spell while thinking of who that should be........................

Dimensions: 7 1/2 x 5 x 6 1/4 inches tall
Inside opening: 6 1/4 long x 2 3/4 inch at the widest end and 1 7/8 at the opposite end x 1 7/8 inch deep

The first 4 pictures are different views of the box and the last picture is of the bristlecone pine root it came from while wating to come home with us.
