Abandoned Asylum

Manteno State Hospital, Manteno, Illinois

This image of a hydrotherapy room was taken at Manteno State Hospital, a cottage plan/colony plan style facility on 1,200 acres in rural Illinois. MSH opened in 1930, and its population peaked in 1954 with just over 8,000 patients. It's stood abandoned since closing in 1985. The writing in this room (part of an original art installation by Kristyn Vinikour Photography) relays the story of Genevieve Pilarski, whose name's written in the tub on the upper left. She was a former patient who underwent everything from hydrotherapy and a lobotomy, to placement in an experimental research ward. She was born in 1919, committed to the hospital in 1944 by her parents, lobotomized in 1955, and spent the rest of her days mostly incapacitated until her death in 1998 as a ward of the state. Kodak Professional Endura Glossy "F-Surface"
(standard glossy finish)

Kodak Professional Endura Lustre "E-Surface"
