The full, round form and the beautiful ripple & feather figure combine to make this piece suitable either as a display piece or an elegant serving bowl. Polar is often a rather plain timber, but this piece was cut from near the base of a large tree salvaged out of the Russian River (Guerneville, CA, US) in 2009 and the wild grain patterns and figure often found near the stump of large trees are, in this piece, truly spectacular. This bowl also includes a prominent long very thin void that had been present in the living tree for long enough to turn jet black. I inlayed the spaces not entirely filled in by the tree with powdered brass.

All of the bowls, platters, plates and dishes, whether they are bark-edged, "square," 5-sided, winged, or round are completely functional, and can be used for food (many of them are equally suited simply to display as sculptural pieces as well). They are all very well sealed, so if they are used for food they clean up really easily, and just need a light hand rinsing or washing. Do not put them in the dishwasher or soak them in the sink.

I hand turn every piece offered for sale here, and they are all my own designs. Everything is produced from locally salvaged timbers. All my work is completed with old-fashioned, pure oil, non-toxic, food-safe, child-safe finishes.
