There was no secret to celebrating a successful and happy Halloween. You just needed to participate in all the fun and chaos of a holiday glorifying candy, embrace the absurd, give into the night, letting it swirl around you in all it's glorious shadows where anything could be lurking.
Nandita smiled, her newly split mouth widening into a pleased grin as she thought about next Halloween. Surely it would be even better, brighter and more amazing than this one? She'd be older then, more experienced, with a better understanding of the strange customs that wove together to make up Halloween.
She'd been the star last night.
Nandita leaned back and gazed up at the sky, the crisp air seemed to enhance the sparkling beauty of the stars. They shivered and twinkled like millions of eyes staring down at Nandita. The air was scented with candle wax and Autumn leaves over a hint of baked pumpkin flesh.
Her own flesh, she sniffed, her stem nose wiggling in delight at the pie like aroma that wafted from her carved body. A bizarre ritual...but she thought she liked it, she especially liked being able to smile and wiggled her mouth about in exaggerated expressions...just because she could.
It still made little sense, the tradition of carting a pumpkin in from the field, to be awakened with knives and candles and set upon the doorstep to witness an almost endless parade of bizarrely dressed humans. But it was fun.
A LOT of fun, that she hadn't expected.
There were whispered tales of terror and fear that were passed along the pumpkin vines at night as Nandita and her kind grew fatter and rounder, glowing orange orbs in a massive field all awaiting their Halloween destiny. Each them wondering what that destiny would be.
Nandita dismissed the scary versions, the ones the younger pumpkins bumped close together on full moon nights to hear whispered to them by the eldest pumpkin. The stories about pumpkins being grown for months and months only to be plucked from their vines never to be seen again....
Nandita shuddered, her happy smile dimming, so she thrust the memory of the story away....it hadn't happened had it? She'd spent the night happily as an admired guest of the human's home, sporting her brand new smile proudly, seeing the word through new eyes that shimmered with fire and joy.
There'd been laughter and colourful piles of candy, silly games and music all night. The street had come alive with merriment and Nandita had seen it, been a part of it all.
She sighed, happy, content. Relieved the destiny of a pumpkin wasn't as the whispered rumors had said.
She wiggled contentedly, squirming until her round shell was more cozily tucked in the pile of raked leaves and yard trimmings. This "compost" pile, her new home, suited her just fine. Not as crowded as the pumpkin field she grew up in, but sweet with the scent of earth, a little alone time would be a nice change of pace after a season of constant company.
Halloween was over.
But Nandita's mind was already leaping into the future, ready to experience the next one...trying to imagine how it could possibly be better than her first....
The moonlight, steeped with magic and the power of the night, slid cooly over her hopeful, upturned face, catching the jewel like glint of eyes that still glowed with un-earthly light long after her candle had been snuffed....bathing her in it's silvery embrace.
Darkness lurked at the edges of the yard, thick black shadows retreating from the moment, instinctively shrinking from the glowing happiness that flowed from Nandita, almost visible waves of innocent magic, crawling like new tendrils of the very plant that had borne her...reaching out into the world, into the moonlight. Hope, anticipation, belief....they swirled together, sparkling in the moonbeams until Nandita's shell glowed softly gold.
She didn't notice, her mind busy recalling the festivities of the night.
Nandita the pumpkin turned jack-o-lantern, thrilled with her first Halloween, sat patiently waiting for her next.
