Coptic books are different from “normal” books, in that the covers (or boards) are cut and covered as a separate unit, and the pages stacked up into signatures, which, when sewn in with the boards, expose the stitching on the spine.

This style of book was originated by the Coptic monks in the 3rd century, where covers for their huge bibles were made of wood, leather or even tooled metal.

Have you always loved the Coptic book format, but thought it would be too difficult to make one?

Here is my latest e-book tutorial, packed with information and fully illustrated with my own hand-drawn step-by-step illustrations, plus full colour photographs - on exactly HOW to make a Coptic book, using very simple materials: a needle, thread, paper, greyboard (chipboard). Plus a gallery of finished books, to provide inspiration.

You'll build this book from scratch: cutting the boards, covering the boards inside and out, cutting the pages and preparing the signatures. Then stitch it all together.

This format allows the pages to open completely flat, perfect for journals, sketchbooks etc. You can also build the book exactly as you want: combine text-weight papers with watercolour or pastel papers, change the colours, build in pockets - make it exactly how YOU want it to be!

I advise on how to cut board correctly and safely, and how to be able to tell the grain direction of the paper so that you'll have a perfect result.

I also explain exactly how to join on your thread when you run out (you just know this is going to happen at some point).

In .pdf format, this e-book tutorial can be saved to your computer, or printed out. On receipt of payment, I will email the tutorial link to you (usually within 24 hours).

I think you'll find this a lot of fun!
