This handmade pillow/cushion utilizes a vintage hand embroidered tea cart doily from Afghanistan. It is backed with brown velvet , with a Japanese zipper, and stuffed with cotton. And has a charming blue seed glass beaded fringe with a good luck felt disc on each corner.

Measurements: 27" inches x 17" inches

The predominant colors are orange, red and silver on a purple satin silk field. On one end there is a shadow, which only was picked up by the camera. It in no way deters from the beauty of the pillow, but thought it best to mention it now that I have become aware of it.

Janet Harvey's "Traditional Textiles of Central Asia" as well as Roland Paiva and Bernard Dupaigne's "Afghan Embroidery" are excellent sources for additional information on the rich and diversified traditions of Afghan embroidery.

As cultures move away from nomadic life styles and feudal societies with industrialization and urbanization, soon this delicate, time consuming, creative workmanship will be history. Which makes this a genuine gem for anyone who appreciates tribal textiles.
