The Tragic Overture and the Academic Festival Overture are both well Known pieces of music. The Academic Festival Overture was written by Brahms in appreciation of the Honaorary Degree conferred on him by Breslau University. Parts of the music are based on old student songs. TheTragic Overture" is what it sounds like. Brahms said of the two works, "One weeps, the other laughs."

Side two is taken up by German Leider Waltzes and the Variations on a theme by Haydn. the songs, all sung in German, are sprightly, spirited and the quartet perform with a fine ear to the tonalities and subtleties of the songs.

Kurt Rapf and Herman Schertmann perform the piano duets; Max Goberman conducts the Vienna New Symphony; and the singers are, Ellen Klein, sopranao; Sonja Drachsler, contralto; Kurt Equiluz, tenor; Leo Heppa, bass. the bac of the jacket is entirely notes, which are excellent in quality - written byesteemed musicologist Joseph Braunstein.
