Probably made during the 1920 or 1930s, this rare English Orlik Standard pocket lighter is made from solid chromium plated brass. Founded by brothers Alfred and Louis Orlik in 1899, Orlik began as a English tobaccanist and pipe company. Around 1916, the company began manufacturing some of the earliest know windproof lighters - nearly two decades before the first Zippo was patented. Orlik lighters are renowned for their build quality and dependability. This well-worn, tall (2-3/8"H.) Standard lift arm model exemplifies these qualities. To light, you lift up its arm to expose the wick then strike the horizontally mounted spark wheel. To extinguish the flame, you close the arm with a simple flick of the thumb. The flint chamber is accessed by removing the screw behind the spark wheel; fuel is added from the base.

Though the arm mount is a bit loose and brassing abounds, this quality antique lighter still works admirably well. Its file wheel and windguard have been disassembled and cleaned and I've trimmed/tested the original wick to ensure this rare British lift arm is in good working condition. I've also cleaned all exterior elements of the firing mechanism and body to remove char and soot from age and previous use, taking great care not to alter the lighter's authentic condition. It will be shipped with new flint installed and without fluid. (If you don't plan to use this lighter occasionally, I recommend removing its flint so it does not deteriorate and become impacted over time.) I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this English lighter's condition. The original chrome plating is quite worn, revealing the warm brass base metal. It has a myriad of minor nicks and scuffs, no major dents or major scratches. I think this hard-to-find Orlik wears its age beautifully. Please take a look the photos and feel free to ask any questions.
