I don't have a lot of info about this uncommon pipe lighter. There are no serial numbers or production markings to precisely date when this lighter was actually manufactured. Machined from solid aluminum, its removable base cap is simply marked "Thoro-Lite PAT.PEND." Functionally and aesthetically similar to the better-known Nimrod pipe lighter, it is probable the Thoro-Lite was made in the United States during the 1940s or early 1950s. To light, slide down the outer sleeve to expose the wick (see photo #2, then #3), then turn the strike wheel with your thumb to ignite. The Thoro-Lite creates a large flame that can be easily drawn down into a traditional pipe or hooka.

This rare pipe lighter was completely locked-up when I acquired it from a friend: the base cap for adding fuel was cross threaded and stuck, the file wheel completely frozen and would not turn, and the slide sleeve stuck in the open position. With a good bit of persistence and TLC, I've successfully coaxed it back to working condition. Though now functional, it is not suitable for daily use and should be considered as a working display piece only. The base cap is freed, but only screws on/off to the point where the threads are damaged beyond repair. I removed a badly impacted flint and the file wheel now turns and sparks, though it doesn't spin freely. The outer sleeve now opens and closes, but its movement is a bit rough. This Thoro-Lite is in pretty good looking condition all things considered, though I did put a nasty scratch on the base cap while breaking free the crossed threads. I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this collector's piece. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
