A classic mid Victorian hinged hair comb with enamel and engraved decoration

CONDITION: good vintage condition save for slight abrasion to the enamel on the right of the heading.

SIZE: 3¼ ins h x 4½ ins w (8 x 11 cms)

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1850s – 1880s

DESCRIPTION:

Here is an excellent example of a classic mid Victorian hinged. The hinge joins the heading to the comb mount. It is articulated and permits the heading to be adjusted to various angles, as seen in the pictures. This means that it can be placed in various positions in the coiffure. It can be worn at the back within or above a chignon. Of it can be worn at the front of the dressing tiara style.

This handsome ornament has a comb mount of natural steer horn which has been dyed to resemble the much more expensive tortoiseshell. Attached to this is the curved crescent shaped heading of gilded brass. This is further embellished with engraved designs and an application of black enamel, which forms a border around the edge of the heading.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

In the mid-Victorian coiffure, masses of false hair were worn in order to construct the kinds of elaborate coiffures illustrated in picture 9. Combs such as these would have been very effective at concealing the juncture where these false tresses were pinned to the wearer’s own hair.
