During the late 1920's and the American Depression, some furniture companies began manufacturing 'novelty' furniture— companies that could no longer sell an entire houseful of furniture to the average American family discovered that they could help the housewife spruce up the house with one or two novelty pieces, like a secretary desk.
This piece is the salvaged 'guts' of one such desk, made by the American Furniture Novelty Company in Chicago— originally, it fit inside a desk and was hidden by a pull-down desk front. This is an example of Asian-inspired decor that was popular at the time.
The unit shows some signs of wear, having been used and loved for many years, but it is very sturdy with fine construction details like dovetailed joints in the drawers. Most of the wear is on surfaces around drawer pulls and edges. There are shallow gouges on the sides where the unit was attached to the insides of the original desk (see last photo for detail).
Perfect for storing you collection of rubber stamps and paper ephemera, add it to an existing writing desk, or build a new work area around it— so many possibilities for this unique piece!

Measures 28 inches long, 8.5 inches tall, 8.75 inches deep.
