This handmade paper artwork is "painted" completely with pigmented flax pulp on top of a base sheet made from corn and abaca. The entire process, from forming the base sheet to painting my image, is done at the same time while all the fibers are wet.

The fiber used for my base sheet is abaca (inner bark of a banana plant) and corn (which I cook down from the raw plant material, specifically the leaves and stalks). All the fibers are pulped in a Hollander beater. I swirl bits of decorative paper into the pulp for texture and interest. Once the pulp is formed into a sheet, I place a series of mylar stencils on top of the still wet sheet. I spray finely beaten flax pulp, pigmented various shades, onto my base sheet to create the image. After the sheet is pressed and dried, the result is this sheet of unique paper, where the image itself is part of the paper fiber. Even though I use the same stenciled images multiple times, each sheet I create is unique, based on variations of sheet formation and pulp painting. Carefully look at each image to notice the subtle differences and choose the one you like best during check out.

"Proud Robin" is part of my series of pulp-painted birds and bats which can be spotted throughout the Midwest region. The American robin (Turdus migratorius) can be found throughout North America. According to folklore, a caged robin brings bad luck. William Blake wrote, “A robin redbreast in a cage puts all of Heaven in a rage.” In my design for this piece, I extended the robin beyond the boundaries of the canvas to show his defiance at being confined.

Although the pigmented color in this artwork is more light-safe and permanent than using dyes, it is best to keep the artwork away from direct sunlight. If you decide to frame this piece, consider floating the sheet on top of the mat, exposing the unique deckle edge. One option to is float the piece, loose, above a backing board or wall by placing something metallic and magnetic behind the piece (I use bolts) and holding it in place with magnets (the video shows this kind of display). I sell these boards under the "display board" category.

This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork. The artwork itself is signed by the artist.

Received my third DWPA painting in the mail today and it is stunning. Love our collection of birds. The work is so unique, masterfully created, and perfect for our home. Highly recommend Don's work and his personalized notes and careful packaging for shipping. A class act from every perspective.

Everything shipped promptly. It's a beautiful painting. We just got it framed -- we floated it above the mat so that the rough edges of the handmade paper can be seen. It looks great, and we highly recommend that strategy to anyone else who wants to frame one of these pieces.
