If we were to pick a single item to embody the swank and swagger of the Brat Pack era...it might very well be this one.

On the most basic level, it's a bar set - two decanters and four shot glasses - made to resemble a classic accordion. All the proper bits and pieces are here: black and white treble keys, ornately-trimmed bellows, bass buttons, mesh grille. The colors - a palette drawn from mid-century lounge decor - are vibrant gold, red, silver and black. The squared decanters are clear glass with a gold thread design, and sport goldtone tops; they fit securely into fitted compartments in the top of the "accordion" body. There's a folding carry handle, so the good times can travel from room to room.

You might think that was enough awesomeness, but there's more. Because while the accordion keys and buttons are decorative, this set does play music. There's a music box hidden inside; wind the key on the bottom, and it plays "O Sole Mio." And there's one added refinement: there are spring-loaded switches in the bottom of the wells for the decanters, so the music will play only when they're lifted out - presumably to pour a libation and begin the festivities. Return the decanter to its slot, and the music promptly ceases.

This set was made in Japan (per the paper labels on the bottom of three of the four glasses, as well as a stamping in the bottom of the body), and couldn't date from any decade other than the fabulous 50s.

The only noteworthy condition issue to report is a fair amount of finish wear on the goldtone metal of the top of the accordion body. (There's also a bit of wear to the goldtone finish of the decanter tops.) It's not rust or corrosion, and the surfaces remain smooth; taken as a whole, the set is in really nice, bright, display-worthy condition. There are no dents or other significant flaws. The keys, buttons and bellows are perfect. The decanters and glasses are free from chips or scratches.

We like to think of this set as an instant cocktail lounge - a self-contained kit that can turn any room into a red-velvet-upholstered 1950s nightclub.
