This gnome is marked "West Germany" and is made of colorfully painted terracotta. The two buckets that he carries are made of softer plastic and are both marked West Germany as well. Considering his age he is in very good condition with one small chip at the bottom of his right foot (see photo). Perfect gift for a Gardner or new home owner!

Gnome History :
Gnomes are legendary creatures that have been part of Western culture for centuries. The tradition of placing small statues of gnomes in gardens has its roots in the 19th century, when it was thought that a gnome in the garden would bring good fortune to a home. Since then, garden gnomes have had a memorable history, filled with periods of popularity, controversy, decline and resurgence. Two men are recognized as producing the first garden gnome figurines in Graefenroda around 1872: Philipp Griebel and August Heissner. Their early garden gnomes were referred to as "der Gartenzwerg" and were soon appearing in gardens throughout Europe. German gnomes were the prototypes for the dwarfs in the 1933 Disney cartoon version of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."
