Yarrow Oil - 50ml

Yarrow or Gearwe in Old English, is known by many names that include Soldiers Woundwort, Herbe Militaris, Nose Bleed, Carpenters Weed, Blood Wort, Devils Nettle, Devils Plaything, Bad Mans Plaything and Yarroway.

As some of the names suggest, it has been highly prized as a healing herb, particularly in the staunching of bleeding and so was one of the major staples of the surgeons of the battlefields. Used along with Chamomile and Calendula, the need for amputations on the battlefield were greatly reduced and so were the deaths from bleeding and infection. It is a herb that is so very deeply rooted in the British ancestral memory because after all, we were a warrior culture and our isles have seen many a battle throughout our history; therefore it is also known as Knights Milfoil.

It was carried in a bundle by carpenters for many years, so that in the event of an accident, they had something at hand to stop bleeding and neutralise infection; hence it’s other name of Carpenters Weed.

But Yarrow has other uses. It has long been used in spells and divination and this gave rise to the names of Devils Plaything, Bad Mans Plaything and Devils Nettle.
The stalks of Yarrow are used in divination, it is added to incense for the same result and when an infusion of Yarrow is taken as a drink, it increases psychic abilities. The smoke from burning Yarrow, gives rise to visions.

It is added to dreaming pillows and a trusty ingredient in love magic. When added to love pouches, it is believed to keep a couple together for 7 years. A very curious mode of love divination that was used many years ago, was to tickle the inside of the nose while saying:

“Yarroway, Yarroway, bear a white blow,
If my love love me, my nose will bleed now”.

To see a future spouse, an ounce of Yarrow was sewn into a piece of cloth and placed under the pillow. Just before falling asleep, the following was said:

“Thou pretty herb of Venus’ Tree,
Thy true name it is Yarrow;
Now who my bosom friend must be,
Pray tell thou me tomorrow”.

Its uses do not end there though. It is protective and when strewn or sprinkled around the home and across doorways, it prevents evil entering; it will also break curses and ill-wishes. Added to protection sachets and pouches, it will protect when faring forth or accessing the spiritual realms. Added to the bath, it will cleanse away negativity and any harmful debris that might have attached itself and also remove the effects of psychic attack.

All in all, Yarrow is a very versatile, potent magical herb and so is a staple of all good cunning folks magical store-house.
