Handmade Wood Walking Stick - Journey Stick/Staff
Carved Wood Spirit

This is a walking/hiking stick / journey stick that I made using a found piece of wood (I'm pretty sure it's oak). I carved a wood spirit into the top of this stick then played around with some dark stain, working it into the wood to give a little depth and detail. The wood was then coated with several coats of clear sealant to help preserve it. The stick also has a leather hand strap, and there's a rubber tip on the bottom for non-slip protection. This is a unique stick that is definitely sturdy enough for hiking, yet interesting enough to sit in your house as a decoration. This guy is one of my favorites; the stick has a good 'feel' to it.

Wood Spirit Legend:
In 15th century Europe, people believed the forests to be filled with evil and/or mystical spirits, and that those who dared to enter carelessly would earn the spirit’s wrath. They believed that if men went out to hunt for food and never returned, the evil spirits of the woods had taken them. Legend said that within every tree there lived a 'wood spirit', guarding the tree and the forest. The trees were the most powerful of all the spirits and maintained the 'good' in the forests. On calm days when the wind laid low, there was a sense of peace and tranquility in the forest. On days when storms are brewing and winds are blowing fiercely, the trees of the forest make sounds of moaning and sighing, as though coming from the spirits within.
The wood spirits are gentle with the maidens, children and men of good heart. Catching a glimpse of one of these elusive creatures is said to be a lucky thing, for if you are fortunate enough to actually see one, your health, happiness and good fortune are guaranteed.
Wise woods travelers assured their safety by carving wood spirit images on walking sticks or pieces of wood and bark. These carvings appeased the spirits, thus the traveler was allowed to enter and leave the forest without difficulty. Before entering the forest, a traveler may knock on the trees to wake up the sleeping spirit to summon their protection. This is supposedly where the saying "knock on wood" or "touch wood" came from. The wood spirit carving should be given a special place within the home in order for it’s presence to bring wisdom, prosperity, humor, good health and good luck to all that live there.

This is a one of a kind piece, all hand-finished. Overall height is 48-1/4 inches.

I love walking sticks and starting making them for myself a few years ago. It started out as a little hobby, but it's kind-of progressed to a near obsession now! I create the sticks as the ideas come to me, and I use whatever I have on hand, often times recycling bits and pieces of things whenever I can. I like to go on walks and find the pieces of wood; other things (like the gemstones and beads) are bought. I invest a lot of thought and time in my creations, and I don't have a lot of fancy equipment or power tools at my disposal; when I say "handmade", it's literal.

Since my items are unique and made by hand, they aren't intended to be perfect or pristine in appearance. There are natural flaws and imperfections in the materials I use and, although I will normally point out anything glaring or unusual, the item is supposed to be rustic and rough. It makes the stick more interesting and unique - I actually prefer to use pieces of wood that are lumpy, bumpy, cracked and beat-up. I like to think that even the 'ugliest' wood can be made beautiful. Whether you use the stick for hiking, decoration or for personal meditative purposes, you'll never find another one exactly like it.

Though this stick is quite sturdy, it is not meant to take an adult's full weight, nor should it replace a doctor-prescribed cane.
