Handmade Wood Walking Stick - Journey Stick/Staff
Wood-burned Sea Turtle Totem w/Seashells
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a walking/hiking stick / journey stick that I made using a found piece of wood, which I'm pretty sure is oak. The wood was hand-stripped of its dried-up bark then sanded down to be smooth. I burned a sea turtle animal totem in the top of the stick, then burned some cross-hatching near the top for added decoration. Additional accents include a strand of shells and silver tube beads strung around the top, a 3-1/2 inch long wrap of suede leather to serve as a hand grip, plus a leather wrist strap. The stick was given several coats of clear sealant to help preserve the wood and there's a rubber tip on the bottom.

The animal symbolism of the turtle/tortoise is protection and longevity. Turtle medicine can teach new perceptions about time and our relationship to it. It can also help us grow old gracefully and in harmony with our environment. When the pace of life becomes too hectic, the turtle shows us how to slow down. If turtle comes with a message for you, it may be interpreted to mean that you should listen closely to your physical and spiritual senses and vibrations, and move slowly and cautiously to adapt. Because of its great age and slow metabolism, the turtle is associated with longevity. When old turtle slowly crawls into your dreams and visions, it is time to get connected to your most ancient heart and delve deeply into the shell you have constructed around yourself. The turtle cannot be separated from its shell, and we cannot separate ourselves from who we are. But, we can develop ways to emerge from our shell to interact and take sustenance from the world around us, and at the same time, allow that emergence to be a blessing to all around you and your spiritual walk on earth.

This is a large stick that is very solid and slightly heavy. It took quite a bit of sanding to make it smooth, but I think it turned out really nice. It's one of my favorite sticks and is definitely sturdy enough for hiking, yet pretty enough to sit in your house as a decoration.

This is a one of a kind piece, all hand-finished. Overall height is a tall 55 inches.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love walking sticks and starting making them for myself a few years ago. It started out as a little hobby, but it's kind-of progressed to a near obsession now! I create the sticks as the ideas come to me, and I use whatever I have on hand, often times recycling bits and pieces of things whenever I can. I like to go on walks and find the pieces of wood; other things (like the gemstones and beads) are bought. I invest a lot of thought and time in my creations, and I don't have a lot of fancy equipment or power tools at my disposal; when I say "handmade", it's literal.

Since my items are unique and made by hand, they aren't intended to be perfect or pristine in appearance. There are natural flaws and imperfections in the materials I use and, although I will normally point out anything glaring or unusual, the item is supposed to be rustic and rough. It makes the stick more interesting and unique - I actually prefer to use pieces of wood that are lumpy, bumpy, cracked and beat-up. I like to think that even the 'ugliest' wood can be made beautiful. Whether you use the stick for hiking, decoration or for personal meditative purposes, you'll never find another one exactly like it.

Though this stick is quite sturdy, it is not meant to take an adult's full weight, nor should it replace a doctor-prescribed cane.
