I believe this to be a very early and, possibly, rare edition of the vintage antique book titled The Tales of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. This copy is most likely an early re-print following Warne's first publication in 1902. This beloved story follows mischievous and disobedient young Peter Rabbit who chased about the garden of Mr. McGregor. After being caught by Mr. McGregor and escaping his wrath, Peter returned home to his mother who dosed him with Camomile tea and put him to bed. Beatrix Potter wrote this story in 1893 for 5 year old Noel Moore, the son of her former governess. There are 26 pages in this book, most all of which include colored illustrations of Ms. Potter's original pictures. My research failed to yield a result with a cover which matches this one, which lends to my thought of this edition's rarity. This book is not dated, but was published by Frederick Warne & Co. of New York which did the first commercial publication of this story in 1902 and failed to timely copyright it; therefore, that first book had no date in it.

By about 1900, most publishers of children's books wanted books with colored photographs, and Potter's photos were not in color. Warne & Company was one of the first six companies to which Potter submitted the story for publication; however, Warne rejected it initially because of the photos. Frustrated with rejections, Potter privately published the book herself in 1901. Being definitely interested in her book, Frederick Warne & Co. agreed to publish it if she would re-draw her photos in color. Following her private publication in 1901, Potter re-did her photos in color, and Warne first published the book in 1902, with the first edition being only 5,000 copies. Most unfortunately, Warne failed to timely copyright the book, though, so their 1902 edition was not dated.

Beginning with the publication of Tales of Peter Rabbit in 1902, the relationship between Potter and Warne & Company continued for many years, as Warne went on to publish Potter's books through 1930. We know that Potter and Norman Warne's working relationship evolved into a romantic one, and they became engaged to be married in 1905. Within a few short weeks of their engagement, Norman Warne died of leukemia. Beatrix Potter lost her own love story in the turn of events, but did preserve Norman Warne's memory in every subsequent little book she wrote.

The back cover of this book states "Meet All Peter's Other Friends - In The Original Peter Rabbit Books by Beatrix Potter - 23 Titles - Publishers: Frederick Warne & Co., Inc., 79 Madison Avenue, New York - The Favorite Classics for Children". In 1929, Warne published the 23rd book of Beatrix Potter (The Fairy Caravan). Based upon the back cover stating there are 23 books, I can only assume that this edition (at least the cover) was printed around 1929. I cannot give an exact date for its publication. I am continuing to research this copy and will update it as I learn more.

The very first fly page has a tear. There are no tears or rips on any of the other pages, however, and the pages have good color and clear print, with the pictures still being very vibrant and colorful. Unfortunately, the very last page is missing from the book which should read, "But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper". The front and back of the cover is in very nice condition; however, the spine seems to have suffered considerable wear from age and use. The book is being offered as is.
