Beautiful Chess set made from American Old Growth American Cherry reclaimed from 1830's Ohio barn beams.

This historic piece measures 15 3/4'' inches square and 2 5/8 inches tall.
Made using wood reclaimed from 1830's Ohio barn.
Beautiful American Black Cherry is used to make both the top and side frame. The squares are made by deep saw cuts and the squares are stained alternately natural and deep walnut color.

This Cherry really has a kind of mellow glow with a warm rich burgandy color. I incorporated Cherry with nail holes which have bleed the black iron discoloration into the wood over a period of generations. A couple cool features on this are I left some of the original circular saw swirls from its original cutting which was probably done on site with a early steam engine, they show as black swirls on the lower edge of one side in the first photo. The egde the underside also chows the crisscross pattern of the orighinal plank, this is visible in last photo.

A interesting tidbit is when Im working with this 180 year old Cherry the sawing and sanding all makes my work shop smell like a cherry cough drop, whoda thunk.

The imported wooden Chessmen are up to 2 3/4" tall and are carved in the French Staunton style and have felt on the bottom of each piece. They come in a drawstring pouch and also includes a small pamohlet on the rules of chess. Be sure to zoom in on the photo of the underside to see the inscription. Each set is inscribed with the wood type, species, and history. I also sign and number each chess set.

I also include copies of photos which show the Winston barn before and durring its demolition, there is also a photo of the Condos that are now where it stood. Also in the flyer is a copy of a 1982 newspaper article on this barn with a cool photo of the old Farmer owner out painting the barn on a pretty fall day and states the barn is 150 years old at that time. I have even included a framed 1940's photo of the Winston Barn, at that time it was being used as a saw mill and thats why there is giantnormous tree trunks stacked up in front of it .

I really enjoy making these beautiful Chess sets. Please click on my ''Feedback'' and you will see previous buyers saying, (and I quote), AWESTRUCK !, LOVE IT, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, BEAUTIFUL, GREAT SELLER.

This set is a great one of a kind gift for any History Buff, Woodworker, or Barn/Farm lover.
