All the materials and instructions to make a stunning 8.5" x 5.5" book with a classic Hemp style binding. By BeetleBarrow Books; a partnership of Chandra Rice and I.

The photo in the gallery of the red and cream book gives you an idea of what your book will look like when you've completed it.

The instructions will walk you through, step-by-step complete with illustrations and technique tips, so whether this is the first book you've ever made, or you're a seasoned binder trying a new style, your book will be gorgeous and you'll love it.

Chandra and I give workshops in the fall and winter in Hamilton Ontario, making a larger version of this hardcover Japanese stab book. We have had an incredibly wide diversity join us, but I observe that most have a consistent experience, which is what I love the most after a full day teaching: Whether experienced crafters, or 11 year old kids, or someone wanting to spend a creative day, there is fretting, at the beginning, with a misplaced drop of glue, paper a little crooked, a bubble... Then we put the covers under weight to help the glue dry flat, and break for lunch. Take a break. Then we come back, and start to sew the whole thing together. When the elegant hemp pattern starts to emerge, and they start adding beads or whatever, all of those pestery things truly disappear. We all start moving around the room admiring each other's stunning creations that are absolutely perfect. And you can see that everyone is so pleased with this beautiful thing that came from their own hands. Which is why we started making kits. Everyone can make something beautiful, and Hamilton might be a long way from where you are. Our website www.beetlebarrow.ca has an albums page where you can see a few of our workshops and the fabulous books made there.

This is a wonderful combination of papers that we've composed and we've included embellishments to tie, stitch in, or glue to your book to make it your very own. Fabric buttons are handmade.
Make something special for yourself or for someone else! It's a fantastic gift for a special occasion, and the right size to take with you anywhere you go.

The kit includes:
variety of decorative papers
cover boards
book cloth
linen tape
waxed thread
text block
illustrated instructions
sewing pattern
embellishments

You will need:
needle
exacto knife or scissors
ruler
bone folder (or the back of a butter knife)
awl or drill with 1/16" bit (or a smooth nail and hammer)
2 binder clips
white glue
round stipple brush (or a really fluffy or spongy brush)

If you encounter any difficulties, let us know by emailing makersATbeetlebarrow.ca and we will happily help you through any tricky bits. Absolutely.
