An antique from about 1910-1930's , and a special conversation piece for your vintage table is such a rare find! Used years ago to serve butter, jam, or lemon wedges!

It is a silverplated (over brass) jam castor featuring open pierce work with basket handle and etched glass insert. The castor is marked: Sheffield Silverplated, E & J B. (See above pictures and history of this company below)

This very pretty glass insert has etched cut flower and leaf design, and measures 3.25" across by 2.5", and is marked: E & J B. There are no cracks or chips in the glass. The silverplated holder, measures 6.25" to the top of the handle, and the bottom is 3.5" across by 1.25", and does have some plate wear, but it does add character to this very vintage piece.

The handle and feet are secure. There is a bracket on the side of the handle, perhaps to hold spoon. There are no dents in the cover, but there is some plate wear.

Researched History of E & JB:

The E&J.B trademark belongs to E.& J. Bass, New York, which operated from 1890-1930.They were manufacturers of sterling, silver plate and silver deposit wares, and some jewelry. They began their business in 1890 and by 1900 they had purchased tools, dies, trademarks, etc... from two other firms (Reeves & Browne and Bachrach & Freedman). Unfortunately, they did not survive "The Depression".

The bottom of this castor has the stamp of the Sheffield British crown, S and a horse in a circle. ".E & JB Silverplate" , along with the words, "Sheffield." I was able to find the following link for reference, which will show you the same symbols that are marked on this piece from E & JB. http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_B.html
