9" Tall,
5 1/4" across top,

I threw this vase on my good ole potter's kick wheel. After trimming it while it was still in the leather hard stage, I then burnished it by hand with a smooth stone to make a surface that would be more receptive to the horse hair process. It is fired twice, both times to apx 1800 F. On the second firing, the vase is removed from the kiln with steel tongs while it is still red hot. And that is when the Horse Hair is applied. There is only a small working window in regards to temperature. When it is too hot, the hair burns off and when it is too cool the hair bounces off. Too hot or too cool equals no impressions from the burning hair. But there is a 60 second window [more or less] when the horse hair burns and sizzles achieving the distinctively unique squiggly impressions. The areas that have a 'cloudy' look have been colored by the smoke from the burning hair. The firing process is very fun, quick, spontaneous and exciting accompanied by the distinct and unmistakable odor of burning hair. Only a 60 second price to pay. I'm OK with that.
Gas fired in a raku kiln.
Original and one of a kind. This will be the only one ever exactly like this.
IMPORTANT....
Because of the process and temperature range, the clay remains very open and porous.
Please do NOT use with liquids or food.
Created with the intention of decoration only. And the outside is sealed with a paste wax for protection.

Thanks for looking,
