Delightful glass hippopotamus from Kosta Boda's zoo series. The hippo appears to be semi-submerged in water and has all the amazing light-catching sparkle and ice-like crystal clarity for which Kosta Boda glass is known. Measures 7.5 x 2.5 x 1.375 inches. Excellent condition; no chips, cracks nor defects. Made in Sweden.

Hippos are found living in and around Africa's slow-moving rivers and lakes. Since their eyes, ears and nostrils are located on top of their head, hippos can hear, see and breathe while most of their body is underwater. Hippos have a clear membrane that covers their eyes for protection, while still allowing them to see, when underwater. Their nostrils close when submerged, and they can hold their breath for five minutes or longer. Their bodies are far too dense to float so they move around by pushing off from the bottom or walking along the riverbed in a slow-motion gallop, lightly touching the bottom with their toes like aquatic ballet dancers.
