The California Trail: An Epic with Many Heroes was written by George R. Stewart. It was published by the McGraw-Hill Company, Inc. and has a 1962 copyright date by George R. Stewart. It is a First Edition, as stated on the Copyright page. It is the fourth volume of The American Trails Series and is illustrated with maps, mileage charts, wagon types, and a pictorial endpaper in the front.

According to the information on the book’s dust jacket, “The California Trail is a story of high drama and adventure, from the first covered wagons that reached California to the coming of the railroads and the whole exuberant drama that marked the opening of the West. As the fourth work in McGraw-Hill’s American Trail Series, it is a worthy addition to a project widely acclaimed by critics and readers alike.”

Another paragraph on the dust jacket gives information about the author: “George R. Stewart is a professor, a novelist, and a well-known writer of nonfiction. He is also the author of many scholarly works. Among his writings are Ordeal by Hunger, East of the Giants, Names on the Land, U.S. 40, American Ways of Life, To California by Covered Wagon, Fire, and Storm.

The dust jacket, with only a few small tears and chips, comes with the book. The cream colored cloth hardback book is in good vintage condition. The cover and spine show a very small amount of age and use wear that includes a very slightly loose spine and a very slightly warped front cover board. The gilt lettering on the spine is still fairly bright. A cow skull decoration adorns the front cover in gold, coppery color, and reddish inks. All of the pages are intact and have no tears, creases, or marks, except the names of the previous owners (Cliff & Evelyn Mason) inked on the inside front cover. The book measures 6-1/4” by 9-3/16” by 1-5/16” and has 399 pages including an index.
