A 1950 Illuminated glass Black Oceans "Starlight " illuminated glass globe with black oceans!

This iconic classic Starlight is accompanied by a 1957 Readers Comprehensive World Atlas that can be stored in the slotted area of the base. Sleek Art Deco details adorn this globe from the chromed raised relief on the black metal base to the retro pop-art colored land masses and chromed meridian. The globe can also be illuminated via a switch located at the base of the globe. Glass globes offer a warm radiant glow that cannot be achieved with a plastic globe. Glass globes were produced up until the late 50's when globe manufacturers opted for the cost effectiveness and durability of plastics. With every part of the map or map gore place by hand this globe is a true masterpiece of craftmanship and high design!

The Comprehensive World Atlas by the C.S. Hammond & Co. provides detailed maps of every part of the world with related indexes at a period in history where the Cold War conflict became less political and more militarized. With this complete set you not only have an opportunity to own a classic Starlight but a piece of Cold War History!

The political borders displayed on the globe include; Indochina (has yet to become Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia), Thailand (changed from Siam 1949), Israel (1948), E&W Germany (1949)

The condition of the globe is very good with some minor dulling of finish and minor gore shrinkage and a tiny spot in Greenland. The base and chrome are in very good condition with no corrosion and 2 tiny knics in the base. The atlas has some wear to the front cover with a split in the spine. All pages are intact with some toning. There is a inscription on the cover page as this was a gift, dated 1958.
