Any great cook will tell ya: nothing beats cooking with good cast iron. With its natural, chemical-free nonstick capabilities to its unrivalled heat distribution and retention, it's no wonder that our old Wagner Ware No. 9 was always Granny's go-to pan!

We're offering a vintage No. 9 cast iron skillet from the James Smart Manufacturing Company of Brockville, Ontario. The company (also known as Brockville Novelty Works) began in 1854 and was considered to be Canada's oldest factory. By 1910, Smart employed over 400 people, specializing in cast iron and cast steel products such as stoves and furnaces, lawnmowers, school desks, hammers, and of course, pots and pans, earning a reputation for quality both within Canada and abroad. The company closed its doors forever in 1967 after over a century of operation.

This 50+ year-old pan is in excellent condition with no cracks or dents. It's been given a cleaning to remove much of the old seasoning along with all of the rust, and then lightly re-seasoned.

What we prize about this pan (and Smart cast iron cookware, in general, as well as early Griswolds) is that it's lighter than most other cast iron pans its size -- indicative of the greater amount of skill to produce slightly thinner cast iron. Another sign of high quality is its smooth glassy interior that contributes to its natural non-stick abilities. When compared that to the overly thick, overly heavy, rough and pockmarked cast iron cookware still produced today, we can see why cooks still prefer the stuff made back in the Golden Age.

This No. 9 pan has a cooking surface of about 9" in diameter (10-1/2" at the rim) and measures 15-1/4" to the tip of the handle. The approximate weight is 4 lbs, not including packaging, hence the additional shipping costs but please convo us for an accurate shipping quote to your location -- and yes, we do ship internationally.
