There are few things in this world more terrifying than awakening to pitch black...eyes open but the world around you remains completely hidden in inky, light sucking darkness.
Even more terrifying is the slow realization as your heart begins thundering, palms sweating, that you are standing...not laying tucked in your cozy bed where you'd drifted off to sleep some time ago...but standing....cold dirt underfoot, a chill in the air that is not your bedroom.
Thoughts of nightmares wing through your mind, you try to grasp on to it, make it so, but the idea slips from your grasp as reality chases it away with the facts...you ARE awake, standing somewhere in a cold, damp place that is most definitely not in your house.
Slowly, after much blinking, whilst clinging to the shreds of sanity that are being eaten away by fear the darkness changes. Eyes finally adjusting...or perhaps the light itself has crawled closer, responding to your silent cries of fear...whatever, the world begins to take shape again.
A sliver of moonlight stabs through the dark suddenly, as if a cloud has just slipped away, revealing the brilliant white light and the place comes into silvery sharp focus...
A cave.....
The situation is so wrong, so very wrong....you're supposed to be sleeping under thin cotton sheets, music murmuring quietly in the background as a lullaby, pleasant dreams until the shrill cries of your alarm clock....NOT standing barefoot, shivering in the mouth of a huge cave, one filled with wicked tooth like stalactites, moonlight at your back and....burning yellow eyes peering at you from the remaining shadows in the cave.
You'd run, but where? You don't even know where you are, the ground is rough and uneven and something about those eyes, hot, flickering, staring never blinking...something about them calls to you. It's almost comforting, in the chaos of the world at the moment, where everything is not as it should be those brilliant golden eyes feel like a thread tying you to reality.
So you grab hold of it, concentrating and your mind is filled with a name.
Purnima...it blooms behind your eyes, expanding until it is the only thing you can think of... The soothing presence of something that is not fear is hypnotic, the eyes continue to stare, a vague outline of a body behind them, something hanging from the ceiling of the cave, the name still whispering across your thoughts...
When you can finally see, having automatically stepped closer, it takes a moment to make sense of the creature...the bat hanging upside down, clutching the ceiling with almost dainty feet, wings enfolded around itself like a leathery blanket and it's eyes wide open and boring into your own.
Purnima, it's her, the realization comes and fades away into acceptance.
None of it makes sense, but the soft hazy call of dreams begins pulling you back.
Purnima seems to smile, even upside down you recognize it.
Darkness slips closer, the shadows thickening as if the moonlight was being smothered until finally all that remains are the eyes of Purnima seeming to take your measure....
Finally even they fade....
At some point the comforting, mind numbing bliss of sleep steals you away.
Awakening like normal in bed....it seems like a nightmare...but you know it was real. That Purnima summoned you and some how...you answered....
There is nothing to do but to wash the dirt from your feet and go about the day as normally as you can...glittering eyes haunting your memories....unknowing what the next night will bring.
