Have you been to Chartres?

It’s perhaps the most beautiful of all the French medieval cathedrals. I once visited there, and walked the Labyrinth. Since then I wanted to do something with this enduring design-
to somehow make it my own.

I looked at what other people have done, but none of them really spoke to me. Either they were too mechanical, or too loose. Or the material or finish or size just wasn’t right for me.

So a couple of years ago I decided to make one out of clay. The idea sat on the back burner until the end of 2010, when I decided to finally do it. The piece was difficult to carve, and it's not easy to produce, but I’m quite happy with the results.

It seems to find just the right balance between precision and artistic expression.

Walking the labyrinth is a meditative process. Tracing it with your finger is even more personal. Everyone who holds the piece can’t help but trace the path.

I think you’ll find that it slows you down, and helps to bring you back to center.

It’s even more interesting to trace the path with your eyes closed. You can’t rush, or you’ll lose your place and have to start over. More than one person has suggested that it would be a great art piece for a blind person...

The labyrinth is surrounded by nine sides- the sacred number of completion and fulfillment.
It is about 12" x 12" x 5/8" thick. It’s made from smooth stoneware clay, and is quite substantial. It weighs about 4.5 pounds.

Each piece is unique in the finishing and the glazing. You will feel and see the hand of the artist in every turn.

The glaze is one I call Blue White. Like most of my glazes it’s hard to photograph, but I think you can get the idea from these shots. It’s a golden white turning blue, with hints of purple where it's thick, and the warm golden brown of the clay breaking through on the high points. It changes it's look as the light changes.

The glaze is complex, and almost looks like it’s wet, or still in motion. It breaks off of the high points, with the darker color of the clay clay showing through. It pools in the low points. The photos almost fool your eye into thinking that the blue-white is high, and the dark is low!!!

Note: The glaze on this current labyrinth is not quite what you see in these pictures. It's similar, but is more golden-white in tone than blue- but it still has subtle blue undertones. (More like picture 3.) It's brighter, and slightly more glossy too. I think it looks spectacular! (Each piece is unique.)

This Labyrinth also comes with a black acrylic stand, which you can use for displaying your new piece on a shelf or table. It can also be mounted to the wall, using the supplied screws.

I'm so lucky to have such wonderful supporters here at Etsy, and elsewhere on the web! Here's what some recent happy patrons have been saying about this piece:
