Medusa, also called Gorgo, was in Greek mythology, one of the three monstrous sister Gorgons, described as winged human females with living venomous snakes instead of hair.

Those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone.

Medusa, the once beautiful priestess of Athena was cursed for having an affair with the sea god Poseidon, thus braking her vow of celibacy, so Athena punished her by transforming her beautiful hair into horrible snakes. She was later killed by the Greek hero Perseus using the shield the Athena gave him as a mirror.
