Feathers have long carried special meaning to many diverse cultures. They were used to indicate status, provide protection and guidance, and adorn ceremonial regalia. Often their symbolic importance was a direct reflection of that given to their bird of origin, be it power, hunting prowess, spiritual connection, etc. Undoubtedly, they are one of Nature’s finest examples of function and beauty. Ultimately they probably inspire us as a simple reminder of the ability of flight that humans have long aspired to.

Ron has modeled this feather after a great horned owl feather. It is carved from caribou antler and measures 2 7/8” (73mm) in length. It is strung on a durable waxed cotton cord that adjusts in length from 15” to 30”. Male caribou shed their antlers every year and grow a new set the following one. Bulls use their antlers during rutting season to fight other males for mates. Each set of antlers is unique to the individual animal. Antler material is similar to bone. It should be kept dry.

Ron was an accomplished, self-taught silversmith when we moved to Alaska in 1980. We were coming to live in the bush, so we sold all the jewelry making supplies and equipment. We didn’t think we would come to the woods and make a living selling jewelry. But that is exactly what we ended up doing. Life is rarely ever what you expect or plan, or is it?

After our first adventure-filled year in Alaska, that included building a log cabin and surviving our first Alaskan winter, we needed to make some money. We got jobs working at a gold mining operation and used some of the money we earned to get Ron back into jewelry making. We learned that people want jewelry no matter where they live.

With lots of work and the help of friends and neighbors, we built up our business. I managed the unending paperwork involved with a small business while also working as the school secretary. Ron honed his silversmithing skills and began working with the gold nuggets mined in the area. The availability of moose and caribou antler sparked his creative juices and he taught himself how to work it into beautiful jewelry and carvings.
