This is a rare vintage Furber print plate carefully rescued from an out-of-print botanical book that was printed in the 1940s. This print is unframed so you can frame it to suit your own tastes and décor. You will receive the print for July's month of flowers (first image above) which is the actual page from the 1940s book, not a copy of the page and not the original illustration from the 1700s.

About the Originals ...
The original illustration in this print, a flower arrangement featuring July blooms, was created in 1730 by Robert Furber, a Kensington, London, gardener/ nurseryman, as part of his flower catalog, ‘Twelve Months of Flowers’.

This was no ordinary flower catalog, but rather a sales catalog in the grandest manner, consisting of twelve plates, one for each month, of flowers grouped into bouquets according to the month in which they bloom and referenced with numbers and captions so customers could place their orders. In all, four hundred flower varieties were depicted, all of which were available for purchase.

Furber spared no expense in creating these catalogs, which he later explained were intended “to make the Love of Gardening more general, and the understanding of it more easy.” He commissioned Henry Fletcher to engrave the copper printing plates from accurate illustrations which were commissioned from Pieter Casteels (1684-1740), a Flemish painter who had settled in London. The plates were then 'colored to the life.’ (Note: The book plate print for sale in this listing was created true to the style of Furber's 18th century original.)

The hand-colored, engraved "Twelve Months of Flowers" catalog was an immediate artistic success. For almost 300 years since they were first issued, the works have been treasured and widely copied, a true testament to their enduring decorative appeal.

July's Blooming Flowers ...
Double Nasturtium, Virginian Yellow Jasmine, Double White Maudlin, Painted Lady Carnation, Scarlet Martagon, White Lilly, Spanish Broom, Painted Lady, Red Oleander, True Olive Tree, White Lupin, White Valerian, Double Mouse Ear, French Marigold, Throat-Wort, Larkspur, Bean Caper, Honeysuckle and more.

Meaningful Gift Ideas ...
♥ This print would make a very special wedding or anniversary gift for a couple who were married in the month of July. (According to old etiquette guides, paper is the traditional first anniversary gift, and a Furber print would be perfect!)

♥ A collection of Furber prints in the birth months of family members would also be special and meaningful gifts, particularly as each new child is born.

Measurements ...
Entire page... 7" x 10" (17.78 cm x 25.4 cm)
Art image only... 6" x 8" (15.24 cm x 20.32 cm)

Condition ...
This print is in very nice condition except for some minor stains on the upper left which you can see in the image. Because it was removed from a vintage book, the left edge is slightly frayed and may have tiny remnants of aged binding glue … all of which will easily be hidden when framed. (At the risk of sounding like a cliche, I prefer this warm, aged condition rather than an item looking like it was mass produced for HomeGoods. The age somehow adds depth, character, and a unique, intangible quality to the print akin to the personality of a wise old soul.)
