This clever gadget (probably from the 1920s) was used to dry clothes indoors, perhaps during inclement weather or in apartments where there was no outdoor space. The device would have been mounted on the wall. You would pull on the string and loop it over a hook or a nail on the opposite wall, and voila, you have an indoor clothes line. The crank locks in place. When clothes are dry, release the crank from the lock and rewind the string back into the dispenser. Pretty nifty. Excellent condition--just a little rust on the crank and a couple of places where the red paint has chipped off. The string is all there and the crank works perfectly. A great collectible!
