This book has been overdue at the Sarasota High School Library for about 60 years, but I'm glad I found it! Written by Hazel R. Doten and Constance Boulard, it's a step-by-step how-to guide for fashion drawing. From supplies required, to techniques for drawing a silver fox versus a chinchilla, to the "correct attire for the girl of seventeen years," to fabric design, to drawing fashion ads, plus an amazing chapter on the history of costume beginning with the Egyptians and ending in the early 20th century, this book has it all. Includes fashion ads from Lord & Taylor, Harper's Bazaar, Saks Fifth Avenue, R. H. Macy & Co., among others. Not only is this book a great reference source for dating historic fashions, but it is also a glimpse into manufacturing processes of the time and the quaint views prevailing when the book was published. For example: "There is a tendency for the young girl [of 17] to desire to wear longer skirts than are smart for her. A high fitted waistline shows up well on the youthful slender figure. The dress that reveals the natural lines of the figure is most suitable." What would Ms. Doten and Ms. Boulard have to say about what a girl of 17 wears today?

The cloth cover has a few scuffs and has a water stain on the inside and outside back cover. The pages themselves are in very good condition.
