Made from Manitoba Maple, also called Box Elder. Its well known for the reddish colouring and this piece has great red streaks.

I got this from a tree that blew over in a wind storm, saving it from the fire place. I chain sawed it up and rough turned it, oversize and soaking wet on the lathe. It then sat for a few months till dry. As it dries it warps out of round so back on the lathe it goes and is turned to its final size. I then cut the hole and slot . I sand it up to 1000 grit sandpaper and buff it with Tripoli. Then several coats of tung oil and a final buffing with Carnauba wax and voilà.

I made the rim and bottom thick for added weight, making it very stable when pulling yarn through the hole. The thick rim will help keep the ball in place.

I finished it with Tung Oil and buffed it incredibly smooth, inside and out, so the yarn flows freely without snagging.

This bowl is a great gift for knitters or crocheters.
