Chinese Export Pillbox Enameled Posies Carnelian Inset AS IS SALE

ITEM: Isn’t this just the sweetest little enameled box? I think so. It’s Chinese Export dating anytime within the first half of the 20th century. The enameled brass box features tiny posies surrounding the top and sides, primary colors against a sky blue glaze. The top has a bezel set stone that looks carnelian to me but could also be glass. I do think it’s a semi precious stone however. The interior features that sky blue glaze as well. The bottom is not enameled and is stamped China. There are markings inside which could be makers marks however I can’t be certain as there is crazing within. In fact, while we’re on that topic, I’d say right off the top that this piece does show areas of wear. I’ll describe it more fully in my condition report but it is an as is sale - so do look at all the photos please! Use your zoom too. The tiny posy flowers also have tiny leaves on the lid. Each side panel features a total of 6 flowers, 3 on lid sides and 3 on box sides. The stone has that dark orange tone of carnelian. There’s a really fun vibe about this little box, a sense of whimsy in it’s almost naive design style. I just love it. It’s just really cute!

SIZE: This cute little box is 2” square and about 1/2” deep.

CONDITION: In fair vintage condition showing areas of wear apparent. There’s no breaks, bends, dings or dents and no rust or verdigris noted. No odors detected inside. The stope on top has no breaks or cracks, chips or missing bits. The surface wear shows scratches in keeping with age. The interior enamels show scratches and signs of wear, possibly a makers mark as well. The exterior enamels have one area of significant loss. The lower, right hand corner of the right side. Milder areas along the edges commensurate with age/make and materials. All in all this is a sweet piece of vintage, Chinese Export enamels, showing age related wear apparent. The whole of which, largely outweighing the sum of its parts. In other words - it’s cute, it’s been loved and it has personality plus!
