This beautiful antique stained glass roundel is of a large red tudor rose - the traditional floral heraldic emblem of Lancashire, England; first adopted as an heraldic device in 1485. The roundel was once part of a leaded stained glass window.

Skilfully hand crafted by a skilled Victorian artisan, the roundel is made from a wonderful glowing ruby-red glass, over-painted in kiln-fired glaze. The red tudor rose is in the gothic style seen in English medieval art, architecture and ornamentation of Elizabeth I and Henry the VIII. A desire for the Romantic led Victorian artisans to look back to the iconography and techniques of the middle ages. This is a great example of that drawing on the past ~ it is a wonderful romantic piece reminiscent of tudor England.

The roundel measures 6 inches in diameter. It is in very good antique condition; subtle surface wear (see photos). It looks wonderful in both diffused and direct light, I have shown both in the photos.

This is a glorious piece of English architectural history; vivid colour and beautifully made.
It would make a lovely gift, or an addition to a vintage-inspired room or display.
