“Give a bowl of rice to a man and you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to grow his own rice and you will save his life.”
― Confucius

"Talk doesn't cook rice."
(Chinese Proverb)

I just love these little bowls. I purchased several of them at an antique mall and knew once again that they would make smashing pincushions even though I didn't really have them pictured in my mind's eye at the time.

That's when I came home with them in my hot little hands and starting pulling things out of storage bins. They took on a traditional flavor with a little Victorian twist. Victorians were quite fond of their Asian pieces and you will find this influence in much of the decor of the time. I think this would also blend with a shabby chic decor as well, as the look of this pincushion does have vintage appeal and materials.

These sweet bowls were hand painted and are signed on the bottom with three Chinese characters. They are ceramic and have raised leaf patterns on the front and back in the ceramic. These have been painted with a pretty wash of soft pink, medium blue, and a little bit of light teal color. The front and back of the bowl itself are identical in design. The design is reminiscent of a hydrangea blossom to me.

The top of the pincushion has been crafted from a blue satin fabric with a white vintage lace overlay that was derived from a 1940's vintage doily. Trimmed in blue braid that picks up the color perfectly, it is finished with a pale pink flourish that includes Swarovski gems and rhinestones.

Five sweet little decorative straight pins come with this pincushion. They have ivory pearl heads with rhinestone spacers and light blue Swarovski rondelles. The pins are a perfect accompaniment to get you or your recipient started on a new project.

The pincushion has been slightly weighted and is a little heavier than most of my creations due to the ceramic. It measures in at just under 4 inches tall and 3 inches wide.

Thank you for visiting my studio today!

Much love and may your rice bowl overfloweth always,

The Gaffney Girl
