This beautiful vintage shell cameo with a silver pin is hallmarked with 800 on the back. The mark is a European mark, and it is used to denote that the piece was made between 1838 to 1961, if made in France. 800 would also indicate that the cameo is 80 percent silver and 20 percent other metals.

(The first and forth photo show sun glare on the shell part of the brooch. There is no white mark in real life. It's just the glare in the photos.)

Beautiful handmade filigree. I've learned that handmade is much cleaner on the backside compared to a machine made filagree. The backside of this is clean and you can see the workmanship.

The whole pin measures 1 and 5/8 inch tall by a little over 1 and 1/2 inches wide.

The shell cameo portion measures about 5/8 inch tall by a little less than 1/2 inch wide.

Weighs 8 grams.

I don't see any hairline or stress cracks in the shell.

There is a light gold overlay on the pin except for the edges. Maybe that's from design or could be from handling this piece over the years. I think it adds to the charm of this pin. Not boring at all.

Trying to date this piece, I would say that it's early 19th century or from the Edwardian era . Fold over latches came in approximately 1901. This piece doesn't use any riveted hinges on the pin stem, that I can tell. Looks like the metal is pushed in on the hinge but I can't see a rivet. Riveted hinges came into being around 1900. The pin is extra long, although not visible from the front like a Victorian piece, however it's longer than the latch.

The Edwardian era runs from 1901 - 1915. I would guess that this brooch or pin was made within that time frame.

The latch works well. It's tight and smooth.

It's in fabulous condition!

Will be sent first class with insurance and tracking within the U.S.

Please convo me for a shipping price outside the U.S.
