Unique and Exclusive *Rune Dice* in Hawthorn Wood! Set 53.

This is a beautiful set of three rune dice made entirely by hand and without the use of power tools of any kind. Even the symbols are burnt into the surface of the wood with a selection of straight lines I heat in a flame before applying them to the bare wood. Crafting items in this way is both labour intensive and time consuming, as well as quite often resulting in burnt fingers, but it feels right to honour the ancestors by using their methods whenever practical. And it means you get a truly original and authentic piece of useable, heirloom quality traditional art to aid you in your magical practice.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find some Hawthorn wood with such a magnificent colour. It takes a long time for the wood to attain this richness and depth of colouring and I didn't think I'd had any Hawthorn longer than a couple of years... luckily, I found a couple of pieces lurking at the back of my stick store! It really is a fantastically rich and warm shade of dark amber. On a more practical note, Hawthorn wood is hard and dense, making it perfect for small items such as these that need to resist a lot of wear and tear. It's also excellent at getting rid of any negative energies that might be lurking around, ensuring that you get no unwanted interference. These dice can be used just like regular runes, by casting them and interpreting the symbols that are uppermost, and the different angles of the faces allow many shades of meaning to be used in interpretation, which makes them extremely accurate. They're discreet and easy to carry, with a satisfying chunkiness and solidity that will make you want to handle them constantly... they even make the authentic "dice roll" sound when you shake them in your cupped hands. I wish I could really explain just how incredibly tactile these dice are, it's almost impossible to put them down!

This is my own design that you will not find anywhere else in the world, and I'm very proud of it! :-)

Some time ago one of my customers asked me to make some rune dice and as I was unwilling to make the ordinary regular cubic dice, this is what I came up with. It wasn't easy coming up with something quite new, but I had a picture in my head of what I wanted and I wasn't going to settle for anything less! Let me tell you, perfecting these rune dice really has cost me blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the fact that I think I've actually invented a whole new range of swear words! :-D I only use basic hand tools, no fancy power saws that will make all the angles true & churn out replicas time and time again. First of all I select a well seasoned log out in the wood shed and saw it into a long square block, similar to the blanks you can buy for woodturning. Then, for the dice themselves, each separate saw cut means I have to clamp the wood at a different angle in order to cut that face, so that's eight times each die has to be reclamped and sawn, and every time it has to be measured and lined up as accurately as I can. Any small imperfections are down to the nature of hand crafting, I'm not a robot but a real live human being! The design is copyrighted to me, they can only be bought from me and (if you don't include all the ones that failed to make the grade and got used to light the fire) this set is only the fifty-third set I've ever made... how rare and exclusive do you want?

I don't get the chance to make as many of these dice as I'd like, but even if I made a set every single working day (giving myself the week ends off) it would still take me over four and a half years to make 1000 sets! It really brings home the exclusivity of hand made items over mass production where a single production run can number many thousands of identical items, each of which is indistinguishable from all the others.

Each die is octohedral, meaning it has eight faces, instead of the six faces to be found on a cube. The shape resembles two pyramids base to base, with the edges and corners slightly rounded to enable the dice to actually roll when you cast them. Gamers will recognise the shape as being similar to D8 dice. After sanding each die with at least four different grades of sandpaper, the rune symbols are burned deeply into the surface of the wood so they won't wear away or chip off and there's no reason why these dice shouldn't outlast me by a very long time. I always burn the symbols in sacred space, and the Gods are always invited. So if one of them decides to jog my elbow at a crucial moment and make the symbol a little less than perfect I try to take it as a joke... after all, the old Norse Gods are known for their somewhat robust sense of humour! :-) The symbols are arranged so each die holds an Aett and, if your maths is up to scratch, you'll have worked out that there isn't room for a blank. You can hold all three dice in one hand and the symbols are clear enough to be read without squinting, even against such richly coloured wood. I've included plenty of photos as they're really not easy things to get the feel of from a picture. The wood has been lightly oiled and, provided you use and handle them daily, the natural oils from your skin should be all that's needed to keep these dice in good condition, but I'll include care instructions for you. The more you handle them, the better they'll get.

I do not include a bag or casting instruction with any of my rune sets, and these are no exception. That's because the bag you keep them in should be sewn by hand, by you, and preferably made from an item of your old clothing to strengthen the bond between you and them. As for instructions, the amount of information I could realistically include in a give away leaflet would be sadly insufficient for the novice and totally irrellevant for the experienced caster, so I prefer not to waste the paper, thereby saving trees, so hopefully there will be a supply of wood for future generations to craft runes from!

Hawthorn, also known as Whitethorn or the May Tree, is excellent for magic to do with general happiness, because it dispels negative energy and strife and brings hope. It is useful for cleansing and purification, and is believed to ease enforced chastity and increase male potency. It is also said to bring good luck in fishing!

Size: Each triangular face is about an inch along the bottom and seven eighths of an inch along each side.
26mm x 23mm.

They will come with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity, consisting of a picture and the list of the magical properties of the wood. You will also receive care instructions, as I expect them to be well looked after!
