A clever wooden hippo toy that doubles as a desk organizer or trinket box from Zoo-Line, circa 1959. The hippos were available in two styles - male and female - this is the male hippopotamus. He is just too much fun! His hinged upper jaw opens wide to reveal a hollowed out lower jaw, while two pins for teeth fit into his nostrils. The eyes are set on a separate block which is also hinged and moves back and forth. The hippos is complete with four peg legs, two peg ears, and a curved wicker tail.

This great figurine has a wood-burned mark on the bottom reading “Copyright 1959 Zoo-Line.” It also retains a silver foil label reading “Zoo-Line Los Angeles, Made in Japan.”

Size: 6" long not including tail, 8" long with; 3-1/2" high

Condition: Very good to Excellent. He has all original parts, and the wood is free of nicks and splits. The hinges work fine and are untarnished. He stands tilted a bit to the right when looking at him head on, which is original to the manufacture and is due to his left legs being a little bit shorter than the right legs. There are a couple barely noticeable water spots above his eyelids. The wicker tail has a tiny bit of fraying near the base, but it is remarkable that his tail has stayed on at all - many that are offered are missing it.
