New York City photograph of The Flatiron Building.

When the Flatiron Building first appeared on the New York City landscape in 1902, it was one of the tallest in the city. The downdraft created by the skyscraper's unique shape would often cause women's skirts to fly up, and as a result, gentlemen would gather along 23rd Street to gawk. Police officers would occasionally clear them out, yelling "Skidoo!' which led to the popularization of the phrase.
