This is a truly stunning piece of 1850-1880 quilt hand work worthy of display in a museum. It measures almost square at 53" x 52". The colors are as rich and dense as the fabrics are lush and exquisite.

The individual triangles and diamonds are hand sewn with meticulous care and precision into a fabulous tumbling block and six point star pattern which surround a breathtaking velvet and silk diamond medallion center. The center is set into alternating yellow and blue corners and the blocks are an array of blues, blacks, reds, browns and grays. The way that the tumbling blocks give way to the six point stars is mesmerizing. The overall view is a visual flood of color, pattern, shape and texture.

The back is made of green raw silk and there is a brocade type embellishment surrounding the center medallion. The entire quilt is trimmed in green velvet. Some of the silk pieces look like they were fussy cut from Victorian silk dresses. With so many ebony black pieces used for shadows, I assume many of them were from mourning dresses and cloth of the period. There is a small water stain at the top of the medallion and a few of the silk pieces have lifted but, overall, it is in excellent condition.

I am in awe of the artist who originally made this and how proud she must have been of her finished product. Of course, I am assuming it was a woman back then but it might have been a gentleman artist, although this is unlikely in the Victorian Era. Whichever, the maker is truly a gifted, yet now unknown, artist of his/her era. Above its value as a century old quilting treasure of superior quality and workmanship, is its value as magnificent textile art that makes it a timeless display piece.

That is has lasted in this good of shape for over 125 years is a testament to the high quality silks and velvet cloths that were used by only the wealthiest in the Victorian community.

This is a treasure!
