Vintage Sterling Silver Belt Buckle with Cracked Amethyst 1970s Authentic San Francisco Street Artist

Astra’s Shadow’s jeweler says:

This is a vintage Sterling silver belt buckle made circa 1973. I know because I made it for myself in those foggy days of yesteryear. It is replete with hippie iconography in the form of stars, moons, and lightning bolts. The buckle saw me through a couple of years of an early career as a hippie street artist in S.F. and beyond. I don’t know how it got so beat-up; I don’t recall life being all that rough, but have probably blocked out a lot of stuff. I have not used it since about 1976. Anyway, it has some miles on it now: there is an overall patina of fine scratches, and the amethyst stone is cracked. I thought about replacing the stone before putting it up for sale, but then decided no, the crazy purple cracked stone is beautiful in its own way, and it speaks of the piece’s history. So I left it in. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the years, it’s to have an appreciation of history.

With the addition of a suitable beat and worn belt, this buckle would be a perfect accessory for the shredded jeans of a rock-and-roller musician type, the bell bottoms of a nostalgic hippie or neo-hippie, or as a personal style accent for someone of the Bohemian persuasion. Or maybe for someone who just likes the buckle. It has been lonely for several decades and needs a good home.

The buckle is a domed oval measuring 2 by 2-1/2 inches; it is similar to a concha/concho, but designed to be worn vertically (long dimension vertical). Thickness is about 16 gauge: the piece weighs 1.26 ounces Troy, so discounting the stone, the piece contains over an ounce of fine silver. The cracked amethyst cabochon measures 14 by 18 mm and is still solidly held by the bezel. The back has a staple-like loop that can accommodate a belt as wide as about 1-3/4 inches, and a slanted heavy silver peg that simply hooks into the belt hole (no moving parts). The stamped design has a border of western concha-style scallops surrounding a pattern of stars, moons, and lightning bolts that radiate from the central stone. There are no Sterling or maker’s marks on the back. For sale here is the buckle only.

I understand that all might not share my enthusiasm for gritty realism and history, so if you like the buckle but not the funky broken purple stone, replacement with a new cabochon of another desired type would be open to negotiation. Please email Astra’s Shadow to inquire.
