Tartuensis Classic is a notebook or diary that is both elegant, ecological and part of a bigger story about sustainability and community. For a lengthier explanation, please take a look at www.tartuensis.com

The process starts with discards from libraries, often Soviet propaganda literature or outdated study books. While the texts have served their purpose long since, the covers are good for another round of use. We carefully disassemble the books to separate the covers from the contents. The former we sort by width, height and thickness while contents are reused to manufacture paper — look for Tartuensis hand made paper in our store.

Next we produce new content blocks, using either recycled or printing industry leftover materials. The contents are stitched, bound and the spine is reinforced with fabric. Finally, the covers are attached to the empty pages. As a finishing touch, every notebook gets a card with the date of manufacturing, the name of the person who made it and a serial number. And from here on, the story is yours — you decide what to fill the pages with, what will be the new content.

We call the series Tartuensis in homage to our home town and one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe, Universitatis Tartuensis — The University of Tartu. From K. E. von Baer, who discovered the ovum in mammals to Y. Lotman, the founder of Soviet (Tartu-Moscow) school in semiotics, Tartu has been the meeting point of great minds since 1632. We intend to keep it that way.
