'River Legend' is a pretty enough old glass fishing float, showing the now popular, well known ancient kanji mark known in the West as 'River Mouth'. You may read more about it below. I'm forever fascinated by old pictographic writing, ancient alphabets and the people who decode these age old messages.

Showing definite normal wear from its decades of service and challenges at sea, River Legend still glows with a glossy sheen. Measuring 3-1/2" diameter (typical 'baseball' size) or 10-5/8" in circumference, the old hand blown gem is loaded with champagne type bubbling. The light teal-blue green float shows some minor iron or rust deposits on one side and small areas of light scratching here and there from impact blows! A miracle it has survived over the decades to charm us with its courage and beauty.

Another miracle is the MINT condition seal 'button'! It shows excellent craftsmanship, being beautifully rounded and well placed. It's surround edge is smooth, almost flush with the body of the float, showing skill and thoughtfulness by its maker. There are no nicks, no chips or grazing to the surround edge.

The seal also exhibits a refined 'texture' all over. It has been said by a respected Western expert that the better Japanese blowers or masters used to 'texture' their seals. This excellent seal shows, as mentioned, the ancient kanji marking called 'River Mouth' or 'Kawaguchi'. The proper mark consists of a 'box' which represents the portal or opening of the river, with the three vertical or parallel lines showing the flow or movement of the river. (Thanks, W. Pich). This mark will always be a favorite of mine, with a fascination for ancient pictographic symbols. This seal shows several 'parts' of the mark here and there with a recessed 'portal' falling into the concave center of the seal. Hilarious and endearing! All for you to enjoy and pass on to posterity. Thank you:)

Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.
