This is the White-Oak (Quercus lobata) that's native to the Oak Savanna woodlands of California, and it's very different from the commercially harvested White-oak (Q. alba from the hardwood forests of the Eastern US.) It is commonly known as "Valley Oak," and the wood is rarely white. It does often display streaks and highlights of a nice eggshell white in the sapwood, which is dominated by a range of tans and browns ranging from caramel to streaks that are almost as dark as the heartwood, which is usually a rich, dark coffee, or chocolate color. This particular batch displays a striking pattern of small, linear inclusions throughout the sapwood sections that, as well as containing the contrasting color of the bark, are surrounded by "edging" that is the color of the heartwood. It is a beautiful effect, and it does preclude this bowl's use for wet food as it might "weep" through the inclusions.

This piece is part of a series with thin walls and a distinct modern foot.

All of the bowls, platters, plates and dishes, whether they are bark-edged, "square," 5-sided, winged, or round are completely functional, and can be used for food (many of them are equally suited simply to display as sculptural pieces as well). They are all very well sealed, so if they are used for food they clean up really easily, and just need a light hand rinsing or washing. Do not put them in the dishwasher or soak them in the sink.

I hand turn every piece offered for sale here, and they are all my own designs. Everything is produced from locally salvaged timbers. All my work is completed with old-fashioned, pure oil, non-toxic, food-safe, child-safe finishes.
